Box Office Talk: November 2 Recap
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the box office had itself a really good weekend. Two of the new releases did impressively well, while the third release didn’t quite fare so well it also wasn’t exactly a box office bomb. As a whole, the box office was up an impressive 21% over last year, when Puss in Boots was #1 with a total of $33,054,644 after its second weekend.
Now a quick review of the weekend’s new releases:
The Man with the Iron Fists scored a ‘C-‘ Cinemascore, which should be considered disappointing since most likely those who saw the film were fans of the genre. The film was made for a mere $15 million, so there’s a chance it’ll make back its budget. However, it’s unlikely to make much more than that, eliminating any chance of a future sequel; something we typically see with films of this type.
The second new release for the weekend, Flight, provided the return of Robert Zemeckis to live action film. Denzel Washington stars in the film, which is definitely geared towards an adult crowd due to its sensitive subject. Flight was a hit with those that saw it, earning an ‘A’ Cinemascore, ensuring positive word of mouth going forwards. Made for a budget of $25 million, the film will have made that back before next weekend. It’s very likely Flight will garner some Oscar consideration come awards time.

Finally, the #1 film of the weekend was Wreck-It Ralph, becoming the highest non-holiday grossing film ever for Disney Animation Studios. Appealing to children of all ages, Wreck-It Ralph earned a well-deserved ‘A’ Cinemascore, and should have little trouble earning back its $165 million budget. The argument can be made that this is the best animated film to come out this year!
Here’s the weekend’s Top 10
