The Cinematic Katzenjammer: Massacre in Aurora, CO

Friday

Massacre in Aurora, CO

As many of you already know, last night at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, CO (just outside Denver), a man busted into the theater, opening fire on everyone and throwing tear gas canisters throughout the crowd. 12 people are dead, 59 people are wounded.

I live in Colorado Springs, just an hour or so south of Aurora. I knew people that were going to Denver for TDKR, so when I found out about what happened, my girlfriend and I were both panicked, trying to find more information about the shooting. Luckily, no one we know was at that particular theater. Either way, this is not just a scary accident close to home, but a dark day in the United States and even the movie world.

I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on the accident and send my thoughts and prayers to all of those involved, be it the witnesses, the wounded, or the dead, and their families. It's shocking that something like this can happen at the beginning of a weekend so many have been looking forward to.

I also want to state that this is the lone actions of one crazed, deranged man. This is an incredibly isolated incident and, while tragic, should not put any fear into any other moviegoers around the country and the world. Don't let this disgusting individual ruin your weekend. Don't think that the violence in these films or their source material is the cause of his actions. Guns don't kill people, mad men like James Holmes kill people. This man chose to do what he did, fully aware of the consequences and his actions.

Movies are meant to be an escape from reality. Let that continue to be the case.

Thank you Colorado, for still allowing capital punishment - Exactly meant for slime balls like this.
